A medicine ball (also known as an exercise ball, a med ball, or a fitness ball) is a weighted ball roughly the diameter of the shoulders (approx. 13.7 inches), often used for rehabilitation and strength training. The medicine ball also serves an important role in the field of sports medicine. However, it should not be confused with the larger, inflated exercise ball.
Medicine balls are usually sold as 2–25 lb (1–11 kg) balls and are used effectively in plyometric weight training to increase explosive power in athletes in all sports. Some medicine balls are up to 14" wide and up to 14 lbs weight, or in the form of weighted basketballs. Modern exercise balls are larger, up to 36" diameter.
Hippocrates is said to have stuffed animal skins for patients to toss for “medicinal” purposes. Persia in 1705 used similar large balls. The term "medicine ball" dates back to at least 1876, in American Gymnasia and Academic Record, where Robert J. Roberts claims to have originated the name, after a story of a sick king who was cured by rolling a large ball filled with herbs (reprinted in Good Health, vol. 51, 1916), or 1894, in Education by Plays and Games, or 1895 when the term "medicine" was synonymous with health as in the "art dealing with the maintenance of health". United States President Herbert Hoover was an avid user of medicine balls; this gave rise to the term Medicine Ball Cabinet.
Medicine (British English i/ˈmɛdsᵻn/; American English
i/ˈmɛdᵻsᵻn/) is the science and practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The word medicine is derived from Latin medicus, meaning "a physician". Medicine encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness.
Contemporary medicine applies biomedical sciences, biomedical research, genetics, and medical technology to diagnose, treat, and prevent injury and disease, typically through pharmaceuticals or surgery, but also through therapies as diverse as psychotherapy, external splints and traction, medical devices, biologics, and ionizing radiation, amongst others.
Medicine has existed for thousands of years, during most of which it was an art (an area of skill and knowledge) frequently having connections to the religious and philosophical beliefs of local culture. For example, a medicine man would apply herbs and say prayers for healing, or an ancient philosopher and physician would apply bloodletting according to the theories of humorism. In recent centuries, since the advent of science, most medicine has become a combination of art and science (both basic and applied, under the umbrella of medical science). While stitching technique for sutures is an art learned through practice, the knowledge of what happens at the cellular and molecular level in the tissues being stitched arises through science.
A ball is a round, usually spherical but sometimes ovoid, object with various uses. It is used in ball games, where the play of the game follows the state of the ball as it is hit, kicked or thrown by players. In the context of sports, "ball" need not refer to a spherical object, as is the case in American football. Balls can also be used for simpler activities, such as catch, marbles and juggling. Balls made from hard-wearing materials are used in engineering applications to provide very low friction bearings, known as ball bearings. Black-powder weapons use stone and metal balls as projectiles.
Although many types of balls are today made from rubber, this form was unknown outside the Americas until after the voyages of Columbus. The Spanish were the first Europeans to see bouncing rubber balls (albeit solid and not inflated) which were employed most notably in the Mesoamerican ballgame. Balls used in various sports in other parts of the world prior to Columbus were made from other materials such as animal bladders or skins, stuffed with various materials.
Physical exercise is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness. It is performed for various reasons, including strengthening muscles and the cardiovascular system, honing athletic skills, weight loss or maintenance, and merely enjoyment. Frequent and regular physical exercise boosts the immune system and helps prevent the "diseases of affluence" such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and obesity. It may also help prevent stress and depression, help to promote or maintain positive self-esteem, improve mental health generally, and can augment an individual's sex appeal or body image, which has been found to be linked with higher levels of self-esteem.Childhood obesity is a growing global concern, and physical exercise may help decrease some of the effects of childhood and adult obesity. Some care providers call exercise the "miracle" or "wonder" drug—alluding to the wide variety of benefits that it can provide for many individuals.

http://www.TurbulenceTraining.com and http://www.TurbulenceTrainingForAbs.com This is the Men's Health magazine Medicine Ball Ab Workout Challenge from the December 2008 issue. It contains a lot of medicine ball crunches, a round of situps, and some other medicine ball exercises to help you get six pack abs. But the Men's Health workout contains a lot of situps and crunches, which might be fine for college athletes, but aren't a good idea for men and women who spend a lot of time sitting and putting their low back at risk for injury. CLICK HERE for a FREE WORKOUT!! http://www.TurbulenceTraining.com Youre about to discover an amazing medicine ball abdominal exercise circuit published in Men's Health Medicine magazine from the December 2008 issue. If you've seen the magazine, then you will have seen there are a lot of crunches and even some sit-ups in there. But, if you're not an advanced college athlete, then you probably don't need to be doing those exercises. You especially want to avoid those types of exercises if you sit at a desk all day and have lower back problems. So, I'm going to take most of the exercises from that program and do them in this circuit, but replace the sit-ups and crunches with alternative versions that are still effective for your abs, but easier on your lower back. This is going ...

This super cool medicine ball exercise not only hammers your abs, but is a full body ballistic movement that also allows you to get out some frustration after a hard day at the office! First things first; make absolutely sure that the medicine ball you are using doesn’t bounce! If you use a medicine ball that does bounce, chances are it will bounce right back up and hit you in the face – or elsewhere. I don’t think you need to be told that wouldn’t feel good. OK, now that’s out of the way, choose a medicine ball that doesn’t bounce and isn’t too heavy that it slows down your body and also isn’t too light that it doesn’t allow for any resistance. For a 200 pound male, typically and 6-8 pound non-bouncing medicine ball works best. Before you go absolutely nuts, do a few reps where you ...
